Would you rate the background music of "Slumdog Millionaire" as AR Rahman’s all time best?

No, I am not saying that. Rahman would have got the Oscars at least eight to ten years ago. He is a genius and God of cinematic music world. The Mozart of Madras has scored much more melodious back scores. If you go through his career, from Roja to Ghajini, he has scored many memorable and heart wrenching original back ground scores. Today, he is the world's topmost music composer. I am sorry to say but it took long time for global recognition to come and fall into his lap. At last the so-called West has recognised his talent through "Slumdog Millionaire" and he truly deserves that award. No doubt about that.

People are talking about the human spirit in "Slumdog Millionaire". Don’t you think some older Indian movies are made much more sensibly than this?

Of course! Satyajit Ray’s "Appu Triology", Mira Nair’s "Salaam Bombay" had been much more and in cinematic terms, they were perfect movies. On the other hand Sudhir Mishra’s "Dharavi" and my own "Traffic Signal" were based on Mumbai slums and I think we have done wonderful work. All of them had that human spirit, blended with reality of the poor world. But, we didn’t get this much applause. If I take my own example, "Traffic Signal" got the National Film Award but afterwards, no one really cared for it. Though I am really surprised, I know I can’t do nothing much about it.

Finally, do you think if an Indian director like you had directed "Slumdog Millionaire", would it have got so much recognition?

(Ha…ha…ha….) Absolutely not! I am sure about it and it would have not crossed the Indian Ocean at all. But I am happy that Rahman has been recognised globally and I am sure this will have a major impact on Bollywood, in terms of market. I am sure now onwards western market will take Bollywood more seriously.
