When I reported from Beirut in the 1970s and 1980s, I covered coups and wars. I never once stayed up late waiting for an election result. Elections in the Arab world were a joke – literally. They used to tell this story about Syria’s President, Hafez Assad. After a Syrian election, an aide came in and told Assad: “Mr President, you won 99.8 per cent of the votes. It means that only two-tenths of one per cent of Syrians didn’t vote for you. What more could ask for?” Assad answered: “Their names!” Lebanese, by contrast, just waited up all night for their election results – no one knew what they’d be.

Third, the Bush team opened a hole in the wall of Arab autocracy but did a poor job following through. In the vacuum, the parties most organised to seize power were the Islamists – Hezbollah in Lebanon; pro-al-Qaida forces among Iraqi Sunnis, and the pro-Iranian Islamic Supreme Council of Iraq and Mahdi Army among Iraqi Shiites; the Taliban in Pakistan and Afghanistan; Hamas in Gaza. Fortunately, these Islamist groups overplayed their hand by imposing religious lifestyles or by dragging their societies into confrontations the people didn’t want. This alienated and frightened secular, mainstream Arabs and Muslims and has triggered an “awakening” backlash among moderates from Lebanon to Pakistan to Iran. The New York Times’ Robert Mackey reported that in Tehran “chants of ‘Death to America”’ at rallies for Mahmoud Ahmadinejad last week were answered by chants of “Death to the Taliban – in Kabul and Tehran” at a rally for his opponent, Mir Hussein Moussavi.

Finally, along came President Barack Hussein Obama. Arab and Muslim regimes found it very useful to run against George W Bush. The Bush team demonised them, and they demonised the Bush team. Autocratic regimes, like Iran’s, drew energy and legitimacy from that confrontation, and it made it very easy for them to discredit anyone associated with America. Obama’s soft power has defused a lot of that. As a result, “pro-American” is not such an insult anymore.

I don’t know how all this shakes out; the forces against change in this region are very powerful – see Iran – and ruthless. But for the first time in a long time, the forces for decency, democracy and pluralism have a little wind at their backs. Good for them.

Why do you think the quest for longevity has been confined to Taoists and yogic cultures only? Is there a connection between the two?

I think externally, Yoga involves a lot of postures and stretching and Qigong and Taoism involves a lot of movement like Tai Chi. When we look at the two, anybody can straightaway tell the difference. But at the higher level, they are the same. I believe that Yoga and the Taoist Qigong, at the end of the day, are the same thing. In both, the body and mind become one. When your body and mind becom

e one, then nature – trees, mountains, rivers, stars, the sun and the moon – connects with you, and you become one with the universe and connect with energy at a higher level. Research suggests that women on an average live longer than men. Is it true?

Yes, I think on an average it is true. And that’s because women take more pain – the menstrual cycle, childbirth – which makes the body soft. A supple body can handle all difficulties and last longer. Ladies are generally more emotional than men, but because they’re emotional, they are also used to taking more pain than men. Men look stronger, taller and bigger than women, but actually, on an average, men die earlier than women.

How long would you want to live?

As long as possible... My teacher was 104, so if I can maintain that standard, I will be very happy. But of course, I don’t want to be lying on a bed and waiting for medicine. I want a quality life where I can travel, have friends, socialise, have dinners, talk to people and remember things and of course, exercise. Whenever I catch a cold, fever or don’t feel well, I go for my practice and recover. Usually, I heal myself if there is any problem.

Any anecdote you’d want to share on the subject based on your teacher’s experiences and yours?

What’s most important is – Do you enjoy your life? What have you done in your life? How many people you’ve been helping and (hearts) you’ve touched and how many you’ve taught and educated? That’s more important than money and name. If you have more friends and no enemies – then even if you don’t practice Qigong you will live longer, and you’ll have a healthy life. The key is emotion. I’ve seen a student who practiced Qigong very well. When her partner left her, suddenly all her energy was gone. At the end, she even suffered from cancer. So, even though she practiced Qigong, because she could not overcome her emotion, she went down. But if she practices to let go, she will be okay.

If you practice Qigong, I believe, you can prevent cancer or if you already suffer from cancer you can live longer, healthier and even recover. That’s my experience – let go. Take it easy.

Certainly, going by the estimated figures, Maruti Suzuki holds a mind-boggling 75% share in the premium hatchback segment, while Fabia and i20 struggle to catch up with it at second and third slots respectively. But with product offerings like Toyota’s Yaris, Volkswagen Polo, et al the list of new offerings in this segment is only getting bigger by each day. So, here comes the million dollar question – Does the segment really have the potential to make all these products a profitable proposition for their respective automakers? Is the segment big enough to accommodate them all?

The premium A2 segment was opened up when the automakers saw a gap between the hatchbacks and the sedans. And all thanks to the decent growth witnessed by young professionals during the past few years, the Indian market perfectly suited the bill. Moreover, be it the sporty Swift or the elegant Fabia, all of them surely infused a fresh excitement in the Indian automotive industry. Result: Maruti Suzuki sold a mind-blowing 1.1 lakh units of Swift in the country during the last fiscal. In fact, this premium hatchback segment helped Maruti to stay afloat even during the October-December period last year, when almost all the automakers were witnessing a dip in sales. Even experts consider this segment to grow at a pace much faster than the other automobile segment in the country. But then, how long will this scenario continue?

No doubt, the competition in this segment will only get intense by each day as and when new premium hatchbacks enter the market (particularly by the end of the current fiscal), but there is no denying that the segment still has a lot of potential and will only see growth in the coming years. “The premium hatchback segment is still awaiting a lot of action and the automotive giants are acting too positive on the growth prospects of this segment in the Indian automotive industry,” agrees auto expert Tutu Dhawan. However, there are many who claim that the segment will surely see an impressive growth for the next 1-2 years, but after that, like any other product, this segment will also witness a gradual plunge.

Many states are banning English medium schools

T he recent inclusion of ‘Jai Ho’ as the new word in English suggests the importance of literature of developing countries per se. In fact the use of English is one of the standards of investment friendliness of a nation. However, the deep routed bigotry in our political system ensures that the visionless politicians get the leeway to abolish English from the secondary curriculum. Indeed, a sad reflection of a country which is trying to come out of the omen of its colonial past to make its mark in the world stage.

There's no doubt that Buddhadeb Bhattachariya’s vision is far fetched. His predecessor, Jyoti Basu, the England educated barrister, stopped English from the curriculum of state-run schools way back in 1984. Buddhadeb’s vision understood the need of knowing English (both written and verbal) for West Bengal students to compete at a national level. Undoubtedly, he is keen to stop the brain drain from West Bengal to more progressive states like Karnataka, Maharashtra and Delhi. But, like in case of industrialisation, he is faced with opposition from within the Left Front constituents. RSP supreme Khiti Goswami expressed apprehension of implementing it in haste.

Most surprisingly, with IT and knowledge-based industries spreading their base in the state, the Andhra Pradesh government has decided that English will replace Telugu as the medium of instruction in 6,500 government-run schools in the state. In the case of Madhya Pradesh, all government schools reverted from bilingual teaching in English and Hindi to using Hindi alone. However, all the sought-after courses at the college level of engineering and medicine in the state continued to be taught in English. This created a strange marginalisation of vernacular users on campuses.

On the contrary, there are still few states that recognises the importance of English. The Maharashtra government had introduced English medium schools seven years ago, and another left ruled state Kerala, is introducing English medium schools from this academic year. Even the Jharkhand Academic Council (JAC) is planning to introduce English as the medium of instruction in all government-run schools in the state. The Council will identify schools in the state where the medium of teaching can be upgraded to English.

India has an enviable position in the world being an English speaking country. To follow the suit, more and more people are readily opting for English medium schools. The trend is ever more omnipresent in southern India where around 60 per cent of English medium schools are located. Truly in this age of globalisation it's of utmost importance that the students know a language that is commonly accepted at the corporate level in India and across the globe at large. If implemented this step will be a heaven sent one for lower and middle income groups who can't afford to send their children to private English medium schools. It's likely that even in villages the parents will slowly accept the boon of English medium schools. Although the proposal is halted it's not doomed yet. Let's hope that like all other proposals this one also gets buried beneath the stack of files.

The Neyyar Crocodile Park itself was mired in controversy when it was renamed after Steve Irwin, only to face legal objection from the Crocodile Hunter’s widow Terri Irwin of the Australia Zoo.

According to the forest department, there are no more than 2-3 crocodiles in the dam now. “What locals say about seeing them is mere exaggeration. There have been no incidents of croc attacks reported in the last 4-5 years,” said a forest official. But residents don’t agree. “There are still crocodiles in the dam implies the fear is still there. The government will wake up only when another accident happens. And now there are the lions in the Lion Safari Park to worry about, thanks to poor fencing. That is another disaster waiting to happen. We are caught between the crocodiles and lions,” sighed Madhu, son of Krishnamma.

Between the devil and the deep sea

As the recession clinches the Middle-East, India faces trouble as thousands of jobless people return home and overseas remittances plummet. TSI’s Anu Warrier reports

Prasad, 43, had been working in Dubai for the last 12 years. He started as an unskilled labourer and was a foreman in a construction company when he was fired from his job last month. Now he is back home with a title well-known to fellow Keralites – Gulf returnee. But Prasad or his family of wife and two children are anything but happy about his new title. “I have a lot of things to complete. Still I am in heavy debt as my house is under construction. Working all these years there, I just managed to marry my two sisters off to well-to-do families and purchase some land.

Construction of the house was underway when this happened. I don’t have any idea when the problems will end and when I will be able to go back. I have to fund the expenses for the studies of my children and our survival" he says, sitting in his house with an unfinished look at Parippally in Kollam district.

Prasad is not a lone figure. Upendra, 24, of Kudlu near Kasargod, Kerala, lost his job in Kuwait last month. Failing to find a new job, he returned home on January 24. Two days later, he was found hanging inside his house. It is said that the youth, who had given a huge amount to the agent who facilitated his migration to the 'dream world', had nothing left barring a list of debtors, whom he was hesitant to face.

Kerala's NRIs are facing the brunt of the global recession that hit the Gulf countries hard. In India's most literate state, the percentage of houses with an NRI is pretty high at over 24.5 per cent as compared to the national average of 11.9 per cent. Overseas remittances amount to more than 20 per cent of the net state domestic product. Moreover, over half of the deposits in the banks in the state belong to non-resident Keralites, better known as NRKs. Around 42 per cent of the NRKs work in the UAE, while 89 per cent of NRKs in all are working in the Middle-East.

True talent hunters of Bollywood music

Out of two Gujarati brothers, when the elder one took a Claviline in his hand and started playing it, no one in their family thought that history would be etched in Bollywood. He was none other than Kalyanji Virji Shah. Then his younger brother Anandji Virji Shah joined him. That was the golden era of Bollywood music and mandarins like SDBurman, Hemant Kumar, Madan Mohan, Naushad, Shankar-Jaikishan were ruling. At that juncture they appeared from behind the scene in 1959.

This humble musical duo almost ruled Bollywood during the 1980s. Especially when Bollywood was buzzing with action potboilers, they composed some great hits like Khaike paan banaraswala ("Don") and Laila o laila ("Qurbani") for those box office hits. On the other hand, they had a melodious heart also. Zindagi ka safar hai yeh kaisa safar ("Safar"), Mera jeevan kora kagaz ("Kora Kagaz") and Pal pal dil ke paas ("Blackmail") scores reflect their soft side and versatility.

Famous music director Bappi Lahiri says, “They had their own style and given super hit songs all along their career. Their main contribution to the industry along with the super hit songs is they introduced young talented singer. From Kumar Sanu to Sunidhi Chauhan almost a half dozen young singers are introduced by them.” The duo composed music for more than 250 Bollywood movies and ruled that glittering world. But, they never forgot their humble background and always done some meaningful charitable work for the sake of society. This brothers were so well accepted in the industry that, they worked the entire gamut of top Bollywood film heroes and heroines.

Pranab, the PM?

TSI has correctly focused on the hardworking Minister For External Affairs Pranab Mukerjee. If anyone deserves to be the next PM of India, it is Mukherjee. He is talented, loyal, hardworking, multifaceted, firm, great communicator, and also very popular. He does not have a lobby of his own inside the Congress party. He is in the good books of the Gandhi clan. Mukherjee himself said that he is not in the race for the so-called second spot after Dr Singh. Frankly, I see no obstacle in the way of his becoming the next PM, if Dr Singh is no longer fit and if the UPA comes back to power. After Lara and Katrina, the next girl to go low key with her glamour quotient is the plain Jane Vidya Balan and that too, with Vishal Bhardwaj’s production “Ishqiya” where she plays a woman belonging to a remote village. So after those innumerable failed attempts to go wild wild west with her wardrobe, Vidya is finally (thank god!) going back to what got her noticed in the first place. Lets just hope that such movies of substance are reasons good enough to help recognise her true calling!

VJ had always been a part of our band of cherubic hell-raisers in school before he took up science and the rest of us moved into commerce. But he’d stayed in touch with Kobita and through her, the rest of us. Having said that, I was still surprised to get an email from him after he had left for what was then Bangalore. Maybe he thought I’d understand because other than him, I’d been Kobita’s closest friend in school…

“ Pickles (that’s what they called me…) I don’t know why I’m writing this to you. Don’t expect you to help… just wanted to share this with someone, and who’d understand this better than you… We’re like two fishermen who sailed in the same river in a village, distant, but always connected by the current. On the banks, they might wave and talk a little. But then one day the river runs dry and both run to the city to make ends meet. And in the city when they meet, they meet like brothers, talking endlessly, of the river. And while they talk, the river runs again, coursing through their lives as it coursed through their veins… Kobita is that river, and while I talk of her to you, I feel she’s here, with me… though her life may have changed course, irretrievably…

Pickles, my emotions are running away with my thoughts. ‘Come away with me Kobita’ I had told her when we met. ‘I know you want to… I see it in the way I make you laugh the way no one else can; in the way I understand you the way no one can and I know it in the way you touch me, carelessly, almost accidentally… but your touch betrays you Kobita. It tells me things you haven’t. Your fingers, in a moment’s brief contact tell me that they long to linger but can’t; that they wish to be held, to be enveloped by a warmth that they’ve yearned for, that they want to touch not just my skin but gently caress my soul…

It is worth noting that with changing times, democracy has spread all across the globe, as has secularism which now flourishes in as many as 150 countries of the world. But, the fact is that religious polarisation has also increased manifold. In fact, it has become a separate identity in itself. People like Karl Marx and others had announced the end of religion in the 19th century. But it hardly holds any truth or relevance today.

Now, people mobilise themselves saying that ‘Religion is in danger, it should be saved.’ In my view, religion should itself be able to save and protect its adherents. But acts of organisations like Ram Sene shows insecurity in a section of society which has been affected by newly-emerging market forces. The market is creating a gap between the rich and the poor. This is not a moral question; neither is it dictated by any positivist or negativist thought. It shows lack of tolerance among a section of people, which is in turn linked to the globalisation, liberalisation and crass consumerism.

That change is inevitable is the harsh reality: which in turn will lead to people taking positions for and against the issues. People like me understand this reality and keep away from these issues, except as an observer. Both in my films and politics, I always attempt to find a solution.

In the Far East we have a classic example. China is a semi colonial country which Japan is transforming, under our very eyes, into a colonial country. Japan''s struggle is imperialist and reactionary. China''s struggle is emancipatory and progressive. But Chiang Kai-shek? We need have no illusions about Chiang Kai-shek, his party, or the whole ruling class of China, just as Marx and Engels had no illusions about the ruling classes of Ireland and Poland. Chiang Kai-shek is the executioner of the Chinese workers and peasants. But today he is forced, despite himself, to struggle against Japan for the remainder of the independence of China. Tomorrow he may again betray. It is possible. It is probable. It is even inevitable. But today he is struggling. Only cowards, scoundrels, or complete imbeciles can refuse to participate in that struggle.

Let us use the example of a strike to clarify the question. We do not support all strikes. If, for example, a strike is called for the exclusion of Negro, Chinese, or Japanese workers from a factory, we are opposed to that strike. But if a strike aims at bettering— insofar as it can—the conditions of the workers, we are the first to participate in it, whatever the leadership. Japan and China are not on the same historical plane. The victory of Japan will signify the enslavement of China, the end of her economic and social development, and the terrible strengthening of Japanese imperialism. The victory of China will signify, on the contrary, the social revolution in Japan and the free development, that is to say unhindered by external oppression, of the class struggle in China.

But can Chiang Kai-shek assure the victory? I do not believe so. It is he, however, who began the war and who today directs it. To be able to replace him it is necessary to gain decisive influence among the proletariat and in the army, and to do this it is necessary not to remain suspended in the air but to place oneself in the midst of the struggle.

As it has been observed from myriad examples on the strategies and success of Andhra entrepreneurs, there is a certain common thread that runs through them. Most of these companies are floated by first generation entrepreneurs. But then, “while personal initiative and purposeful behaviour are viewed as good starting points of an entrepreneurial effort, many such initiatives fail. The archetype successful entrepreneurs are supposed to epitomise achievement motivation which facilitates the creation and development of enterprises in competitive environments,” says a market analyst. Certainly when an individual makes his initiative achievement orientated and visioning has a strong bearing on what it produces, one sees the creation of altruist enterprises. The perspective of that entrepreneur, a merchant adventurer, balances out imperfections in the market. For instance, Dr. Pratap C Reddy can be called an altruist–entrepreneur of that kind. Dr. Reddy is the founder of the Apollo Hospital Group, India's first corporate hospital group. He revolutionised the whole health care scenario in India and inspired others to follow the suit. Today, India has over 750 corporate hospitals all over the country. And it all started when two decades ago, Dr. Prathap C Reddy lost a patient who couldn't make it to Texas for an open heart surgery. Ironically it was this incident that urged Dr. Reddy to give up his successful practice in the US to return to India in the early eighties and create a world-class medical infrastructure in India, more accessible and affordable to the common people of the country.

However, the anticlimax of the success story of Andhra entrepreneurs is somewhat bitter. In fact, ever since the Satyam-Maytas fiasco saw light in December 2008 and the arrest of K S Raju of NFL, came to fore, AP businessmen are in the news for all the wrong reasons. Hyderabad is acquiring a bad reputation, so much so, that on the day when B Ramalinga Raju made his confession, six of the Top 10 losers in the stock exchange were from Hyderabad!
