International film festivals: Great movies...
Shouldn’t the prime focus of festivals be concerned with locating new voices, talents, themes and styles that are ground-breaking? Aren’t there enough platforms across the globe for Bollywood to flash its wares compared to regional cinema, driven by creativity and passion but hopelessly bereft of Bollywood’s networking star-power?
Explodes Akash Pal, a fervent film festival devotee, “The problem really begins with today’s pathetically dumbed-down media who appear perpetually star-struck and Page-3 driven, hysterically hooked on to glamour and glitter rather than content or substance. I guess it is a sign of the times. Glamour and sex-appeal are popularly perceived as the ultimate aphrodisiacs, but somewhere they have goofed it up. Festivals are not meant for the masses (read: Bollywood junkies) but for those discriminating, serious lovers of movies of the intelligent, non brain-dead quality which will never see the light of day in mainstream commercial movie theatres.” Maya Kapoor, a young college going student vehemently disagrees.
