Obama's brigade promises a fresh perspective to the Middle East issue, but is treading on a difficult terrain

With a near thunderbolt pace, American President Barack Obama has transformed the line of US foreign policy in less than a week. After taking the oath to the Oval office, the new President made it clear that America’s aspirations and objectives will be in accordance with its ideals and the rule of law. By saying “we have no time to lose,” Obama summarised in a curt reply how pressing he deems it to bolster American foreign relations. In the first two days, the new-fangled government has been taking actions at a pace that were unheard and unseen in the previous administration. Giving orders from the White House and State Department headquarters, Obama pronounced the shutting down of the Guantanamo Bay confinement centre in Cuba; the selection of two extraordinary diplomatic envoys to aid in achieving Arab-Israeli amity; the issues in Afghanistan and Pakistan are also being addressed. However, some experts believe that the Guantanamo step has been taken in haste.

Pfizer’s bid for Wyeth makes sense; but it suffers from the fundamental problem with M&As – high risk!

And here’s Pfizer proving why both can coexist, through its $68 billion bid for Wyeth. In the name of cost synergies, Pfizer hopes to save $4 billion annually in operational costs via streamlining of activities. But as researches over time have proven, most big-ticket M&As have failed to generate any synergy! So here’s the question – is the deal logical?

Pfizer faces a major challenge of new drug development as its patent for Lipitor (that contributed to $6 billion in FY2008) will expire in November 2011. And that gives a ‘real’ reason for the merger – revenue generation! Wyeth’s core competence is in R&D. About 350 scientists in its labs are solely working on the much-awaited drug formulae for treating Alzheimer’s disease that can become the next drug wonder for Pfizer (generating revenues up to $20 billion annually).

Europe gloated during the meltdown, claiming it would be left untouched. The claims return to haunt a failing Europe

I945: Europe is completely devastated and in ruins after the Second World War. It is also facing the haunting spectre of Communism emanating from the Soviet Union. And yet, Western Europe rises from the ashes and emerges as a powerhouse of economic growth and all round prosperity. The resurgence is thanks largely to the Marshall Plan implemented by the United States.

1957: A handful of European nations come together and form the European Economic Community that seeks a ‘European’ perspective on global as well as local issues. This is the first tentative attempt by Europe to emerge out of the trans-Atlantic embrace with America. Many more nations join by 1967 and Europe starts dreaming of a unified market that can emerge more powerful than America.

1993: The European Union emerges as an actual rival of the United States with 500 million citizens and 30% of the world output. By now, Europe is frequently critical of America and its policies – political, strategic as well as economic. The criticism climaxes after the foolhardy George Bush decision to invade Iraq in 2003 and many start openly talking of EU as a rival to the US and euro as the rival to the dollar.

Sri Lanka may finally crush LTTE, but India has lost out a valuable opportunity to extend its influence

Along with Osama bin Laden, Velupillai Prabhakaran is the most elusive character encountered by security agencies in the world. The Sri Lankan forces can certainly vouch for it. Weeks after President Mahinda Rajapakse vowed to get rid of Tamil Tigers, the fight inside the dense Mullaithivu jungles continues with no sign yet of the Tiger supremo. These jungles are recognised as the last holding point of the Tamil guerillas. The Sri Lankan government, in its effort to drive home its offensive, has asked the air force to bombard the dense forests in an effort to flush out LTTE militants. A spokesperson for the air force confirmed that ‘in support of ground troops’, bombardment of Tiger positions would continue. “The next step of the war would be that the LTTE, after being ousted from its well fortified positions, will go back to what it knows best, guerilla warfare,” Maj. Gen. Ashok Mehta, former general officer commanding with the Indian Peace Keeping Forces (IPKF) in Sri Lanka, told B&E.

If China continues its development, there’s slim chance Obama can control us

However, while the former Secretary of the Treasury has asked Beijing not to devalue the RMB, Obama’s administration has remained rather silent on the issue. In fact, Obama’s handpicked Timothy L. Geithner somehow favours a more “disciplined and conservative fiscal policy” that may reduce capital flow and the exchange rate.

The devaluation of the US dollar will definitely affect the prospects of the treasury bonds held by different Chinese banks and corporations. The collapse of the US domestic market will further hurt China’s vast export interests and direct investment in the States. Putting aside the economic figures, this also means a reduction in Washington’s ability to impose economic pressure on Beijing.

On the security front, one of the features of the Bush administration is its unilateral action in foreign policy. As Joseph Nye has stated, Bush’s office has nearly destroyed all the American soft-power capacity established since the Cold War. As a consequence, Obama’s administration has put “Renewing American Global Leadership” as of the utmost importance.

We deduce in the negative. Would Obama then have the courage to tell the world at large that the US invasion of Iraq had much less to do with ‘War on Terror’ and more about preventing Saddam from becoming the Gulf oil king? Or would Obama publicly announce the return of all the oil that US has been ‘importing’ out of Iraq? In spite of his victory speech at Grant Park – considered amongst the three greatest ever – we guess Obama would smilingly give such acceptances a bye. Damned if he does.

Bush was blamed for over-stretching the defence budgets; there is little doubt that Obama would reduce it. For the FY 2008, aggregate security related funding of US is estimated to be $549 billion. If one includes the $173 billion supplementary budget for the ‘War on Terror’, then the overall defence budget stands at $749 billion. Likewise, for 2009, the total estimated request for defence budget stands at around $663 billion.

In all, it is futile to expect too much, except Obama’s fight to save capitalism. The world would remain the same and Africans would continue to fight ethnic wars, hijack ships and die of AIDS for lack of antiretroviral drugs. As the rats jump, so does the common man in the US, and elsewhere, who cannot be blamed for expecting Obama to be a panacea for all the ills. Try he will... and fail he will. But love him still, we will! Damn!

Hence, despite the fact that Pakistan’s Chief of the Army Staff, Gen. Ashfaq Pervaiz Kayani, who is said to be secular and a thorough professional soldier, and President Asif Ali Zardari, himself a victim of terrorism, are adamant to eradicate terrorism, it will take a long way to re-educate the people, including jihadi elements in the establishment.

More so because during the 61 years of its existence, Pakistan has been governed by direct military rule for as many as 34 years and the democratic governments have abysmally failed to assert themselves. The populist government of Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, for instance, succumbed to the pressure of right-wing Pakistan National Alliance-led movement in 1977; and in order to appease the mullahs, Bhutto declared the minority Ahmedi community non-Muslims. Ironically, the mullahs were least impressed and collaborated with military dictator General Zia-ul Haq who staged a coup in July 1977 and not only sent Bhutto to the gallows but made a pretty liberal society the hostage of jihadi elements. But Obama would already know that, given his in-place coterie!

“Pakistan is a different place now with a civilian government and an army leadership that is working in concert to try to bring an end to extremism within Pakistan,” Rice has been quoted as saying. But it must be kept in mind by Obama that what we are witnessing today in this part of the world is the logical outcome of decades of brainwashing of Pakistani youth through formal and informal education and it’s a lofty task to eradicate irrationalism from the minds of a considerable chunk of the people. According to The Subtle Subversion: The State of Curricula and Textbooks in Pakistan, a research study published in 2004 by Sustainable Development Policy Institute, an independent think tank based in Islamabad, “[Many say that] the classical religious education mixed with militancy is supposed to be the deadly mix giving rise to the narrow vision that breeds hate and irrationality resulting in the international jihad. This however is not entirely true. Madrassas are not the only institutions breeding hate, intolerance, a distorted world view, et al. The educational material in the government run schools do much more than madrassas. The textbooks tell lies, create hate, incite jihad and shahadat, and much more.” It further comments: “Over the years, it became apparent that it was in the interest of both the military and the theocrat to promote militarism in the society. This now gets reflected in the educational material.”

We know why you stopped by this page [Surely, not because of your killing enthusiasm to understand complicated structural factors affecting the Indian aviation industry, huh!]. We call it the 3G of aviation. Glamour, girls and gizmos! Mallya was counting on the same three factors to ensure that passengers ‘stop by’ his airline. Well, passengers, like yours truly, did stop by in the thousands, but unfortunately, rather than striking the metaphoric gold, all that Mallya struck were three pathetic more Gs! Global fuel prices, government regulations and gadzillion godforsaken losses! Check the figures out! While the global aviation industry is expected to cross the $6.2 billion mark this year, the Indian aviation industry is expected to cross a loss of Rs.9,000 crore at the minimum, more than 33% of global losses. Forget forecasts, for the last financial year (FY07-08), the Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation (CAPA) has estimated the Kingfisher Airlines losses to be at a killing $500 million, or Rs.2,100 crore! If you add Air Deccan’s FY07-08 losses of Rs.834 crore to that, the combined loss comes to close to Rs.3,000 crore! That’s more than 33% of the Indian aviation industry’s losses!

When we met Vijay Mallya just a handful of months back, and had asked him the logic of such a business, Mallya had confidently parried, “I think other business leaders think of many strategies before investing into certain businesses; but for me, it’s just passion that drives me.” But really, can just passion make any group withstand such humongous and gut wrenching losses? Kingfisher’s Executive Vice President, Hitesh Patel, confesses to us, “We are just looking for survival first, and everything rest would follow.” It’s a serious question we ask now – Can Kingfisher Airlines really be sustained? Can it, in short, survive?

CEOs have ripped apart shareholders’ wealth globally under the guise of M&As; Indian firms more so! B&E’s Manish K. Pandey, Deepak R. Patra and Karan Mehrishi undertake the most radical analysis of the recent past and destroy age-old perceptions!

The pity is, Indians never learn! You’ll get the drift by the time you end the introduction. First, the dirt! The year 2000 was the eve of the glorious new century, and a boon for the Big-6 M&A consulting firms. And why not! For these global consulting proponents, an example like the year 2000 Vodafone-Mannesmann merger was god’s gift multiplied many times over. It was proclaimed to be the single largest deal in history. Sir Christopher Gent, then CEO, Vodafone paid a smashing $190 billion for Germany’s Mannesmann AG, making Vodafone the biggest operator in Europe. The combined entity was valued at $365 billion, making it the world’s fourth largest company overnight. What better a gift could the M&A brayers ask for? Wasn’t this M&A deal enough proof that M&As were/are the only dynamic and rapid solution forward to mammoth growth and that all those who had criticised M&As for the past so many years were nothing but dimwits?

I don’t believe in creative capitalism!

B&E: What, as per you, are the benefits of ‘creative capitalism’?
MY: Honestly speaking, I don’t know if I am really following any kind of creative capitalism. I don’t believe in creative capitalism! I am talking about a new form of capitalism here, which is a nouveau form of completely redesigned and restructured capitalism, where there is room for two kinds of businesses and not just one. So what I have done is that I have created space for new types of businesses like the Grameen Bank where investors don’t really make any profit. Also I have designed a profit maximising business which is all by poor people & is also a social business within the Grameen Bank. I don’t make any money out of that, I don’t own any share or whatsoever in any of the social business I have created. Coming back to your question of creative capitalism; No! I haven’t done any creative capitalism yet and haven’t benefited from it.

who conduct joint corporate training workshops with the best of the best faculty from the topmost B-schools globally

Most of the IIMs are located in cities of extremely low corporate relevance; and this is another reason why mainstream corporations are hardly ever heard using the consulting services of IIM professors – a reason why the consulting work done by IIPM professors, for example, is much higher. At the same time, the IIM faculty mettle is never tested directly in competition with global faculty, since the IIM faculty never conducts joint workshops with foreign faculty – this is again something that is mandatory for top faculty at IIPM who conduct joint corporate training workshops with the best of the best faculty from the topmost B-schools globally, like Kellogg, Wharton, Harvard, Columbia, Chicago GSB, Insead etc. (refer to the box), something that even ISB professors don’t! Such joint workshops reveal a lot about the courage and conviction that faculty members have when pitted against the global best; and of course, at IIPM, when we claim that our faculty are the best that the world has to offer, this claim is not without reason, since we have workshop participant feedback forms with the names of these participants to prove how phenomenally corporate India rates IIPM faculty!

B&E: Earlier Dabur has announced its future plans would necessarily have retail and how do you want to achieve that through New U? SD: We want to make New U a profitable venture and I think at this point of time we have to consider a lot about the realty cost. Is realty going to come at a significantly high price, what form it''s going to take and how’s modern trade going to evolve. We have to watch this very carefully and at this moment, realty cost in India is very high. But I don’t think this will continue very long, soon the cost will come down and there would be equilibrium. We are waiting for that, we will not desperately create a growth model. So in terms of scale, we have put few stores with clear visibility and then we plan to emerge as a big brand.

B&E: But doesn''t venturing into retail create conflict of interest with retailers? SD: If the scale becomes really very huge, then there’s always a chance that retailers might say no to our product. But I think we are too small and we still have a long way to go.
