Why religion will always be trafficked religiously!

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

The nature of the beast is clearly hypocritical, given the way the State ‘deals’ with ‘secularism’

http://www.businessandeconomy.org/24072008A casual walk near my house in Delhi the other day triggered memories of a dilemma I had faced as a youngster long ago in 1986. I saw a bunch of people sticking posters on walls. Curious, I went up to read the words and was shocked into nostalgia. The posters talked about the Amarnath Yatra and how Hindus were being denied the right to worship in their own homeland. The posters exhorted Hindus to rise to save their religion. More shocking, I actually saw fellow citizens read the posters and nod in tacit agreement. Way back in 1986, I would frequently encounter fiery young people who were out to save Hinduism. In those days, it was the great ‘Shah Bano’ betrayal that prompted the self appointed guardians of Hinduism to proclaim that Hindus had become second class citizens in their own country.

Both then, and now, angry ‘Hindu’ activists are accusing the State of adopting a policy regime that is partial towards one religion and discriminates against the other. In 1986, the Indian Parliament passed a Bill that basically overturned a Supreme Court verdict that granted alimony to Muslim women. Most sober analysts trace the rise of the BJP and that even of the extremist fringe outfits like VHP and Bajrang Dal to that one day of infamy in Parliament. In 2008, the Jammu & Kashmir government initially allotted forest land for the construction of temporary shelters for Amarnath pilgrims. In the face of massive protests in the Valley, the allotment has been withdrawn. And now, VHP activists are claiming that once again, Hindu rights are being trampled upon.

Any Indian with common sense would know that the charge hurled by VHP activists – of pampering Muslims at the cost of Hindus – is utter hogwash. Be it government jobs, access to health and education, employment opportunities and what not, Muslims have a lot to be angry with policy makers in the country. For sixty years and more, they have been treated by political parties like a monolithic vote bank.

Dial ‘C’..., where the effects show up after a certain age.

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

...for ‘Cell’...a cancer cell!

the banal smoking As far as the accounts of history go, I don’t think that man has ever been more conscious about his health than he is today. This is to the extent, that if breathing wasn’t ‘it’, by now books like ‘10 ways to keep away from breathing on highways’ would have hit the bookstores.

So, for a change, there is another habit (not reflexive like breathing) that has hooked human beings of all shapes, sizes and attitudes – much more dangerous and addictive than the banal smoking – talking on mobile phones. Well, not that we weren’t aware that it could be harmful for the ears etc., but that it can cause malignant tumours in the brain in much lesser time than you could have imagined is but horrifying.

The results of a 14-month investigation by the Canberra-based top Neurosurgeon, Vini G Khurana, has got the world to rethink its way of living. In his report, he gives enough evidences to warn the governments, telecom industry and the users about the deadly effects of simultaneous electro-magnetic exposure caused by the radiations released from radio and TV towers, cordless phone base stations, wireless etc. The report clearly establishes link between long-term usage of mobile phones and some malignant forms of tumours in the brain. Unfortunately, this ‘long-term’ isn’t that long! Ten years is the time-period within which the cancerous growth may show up, making it an even bigger threat than smoking and asbestos, where the effects show up after a certain age.

Professor Challis, an experts on mobile phone radiation has enlightened the media by revealing that about 40% of the radio energy of the mobile or wireless phone is absorbed into one’s head. The exposure caused by mobile phone is 200 times more than sending an email using wi-fi technology. “The risk is even larger in children than in adults since their brain is still growing and the skull is thin. In fact, anybody using mobile phone for two hours everyday for a year is quite prone to catching an ailment in the next five to seven years,” tells Dr. Pankaj Kumar Jha, a practicing Neurosurgeon.

Now that’s alarming! Today there are some three billion users of mobile phones across the world including an increasing number of young children as well. While ten years back the number was far less, it could be a reason why the researches are not being able to gather enough evidences. But then, if one notices, the major advancements in learning about what causes cancer has always taken a longer time, be it the case of smoking, Nagasaki-Hiroshima bombing effects, sunlight causing skin cancer or asbestos. The research by the several accolades winner Mr. Khurana and several others in UK has sent shivers down the spine of telecom associations and the government of India as well, which would soon set out policies to limit public exposure to radio waves from base stations and mobile handsets. While not setting up base stations near hospitals, schools or residential areas is in the hands of the authorities, it is time that individuals take charge of their own lives too.

Though variety adds spice to life, there is always a hitch even to the best of things. The time has come when making choices to sustain not just life but healthy happy lives is crucial. For all you know, the virtual-mobility-revolution being celebrated by mankind could actually be the reason for its extinction.

Cut the risk

l Avoid mobile phones for children until senior school.
l Use a landline whenever possible and laptops not to be used on the lap!
l Use the speaker and keep the mobile 20 cms away from the head while talking.
l ‘Texting’ better than calling.
l Cover the wire of the hands-free with a cover of ferrite beads.

We are ready for the ride! The new machines were safer with bigger wheel diameters, more fuel efficient with mileage higher,

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

Scooter manufacturers need to get their helmets on for a speedier ride with fabulous sales during FY08

SCOOTER CATEGORY: THE REVIVALstroke was all it took for Achilles to slay the giant and win the war for Agamemnon’s Greek army in the Hollywood flick Troy. Something similar happened in India too – one shot is all it took for the ‘motorcycle’ machines to wipe off the much-loved chunnu munnu di gaddi, the scooter! The new machines were safer with bigger wheel diameters, more fuel efficient with mileage higher, better looking et al. So, obviously the scooter were dying, right?

Watch the numbers though – with 1.05 million scooters sold during FY08, the segment marked a smashing growth of 11.6%! In shocking contrast is the fact that during the same period, the motorcycle category sales shrunk by a lamentable 11.8%! So do we blame rising interest rates and inflation for the anomaly? Whatever the reason be, the ‘existent’ demand for scooters was clearly visible! So the companies are now taking the strategy to heart – trying to brand scooters afresh and giving consumers high perceived value; and it’s worked well for them as sales figures prove (remember the Nobel-prize winning Prospect Theory?). Honda took the lead in this regard as it sold 618,320 units last year. Even Suzuki is working on its alternate two wheeler strategy with the launch of its Access ungeared scooter (after its motorcycle tactic failed). TVS also launched two special edition scooters on May 1, 2008 & is upbeat about its scooter prospects. “I think gearless scooters are picking up. We have scooty as well as Teenz Electric and we will continue to add to our scooter range. On an annual basis, you can expect at least one new product lauinch from our stable,” asserts Venu Srinivasan, Chairman, TVS.

However there is a ‘wait and watch’ policy doing the rounds. Amidst this insecurity, there is a ray of hope for the scooter and times ahead look positive. And after all the hulabaloo about the motorcycle and the small car, the scooter might just be the next fashion symbol of the Indian middle classes… It; Just; Might. Period!

No balls, we say, its current state is pitiable to say the least.

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

Football is almost a lost cause

SPORTS: FOOTBALLFootball?!? Who plays football in India? Oh, you mean the school kids in the other block! That’s ok. Professionals don’t play football in India. And we suspect, they never will... Though India is one of the pioneering nations in Asian Football, its current state is pitiable to say the least. The FIFA Chief Stepper Blatter did visit India [he described her prospect as a ‘Sleeping Giant’] with the Asian Football Confederation’s (AFC) General Secretary Peter Velappan, and they together unfolded Vision Asia and Vision India.

We guess the ‘Sleeping Giant’ has now proceeded into a coma. In spite of the efforts from FIFA and AFC, the All India Football Federation (AIFF), which is the governing body of football in India, has failed to build a team that can compete at the world stage. It is an utterly pathetic and spittable failure that neither sponsors nor players see any future in this game. And did you say spectators? Oh please. We have more people in the emptiest Mumbai local than there are in India’s most attended football match.

Forget trying to improve the state, bureaucrats have the cheek to blame almost everything under the sun, but themselves. Wait till you hear the President of AIFF, Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi, who now says that cricket is eating away football in India. Sir, we’d like to add to that list. Shopping malls, movies, restaurants...and of course, Mumbai locals!

Who Said Priecy is Passe ?

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

Royalty may have receded into history for good, but India’s penchant for opulent living is only growing by the day. B&E takes a closer look...

Blame it on noted management guru C. K. Prahlad, if you must, or on a few exceptionally successful business models that leveraged on the ‘bottom of the pyramid’ over the past few years; the ‘top’ had begun to look like a neglected stepchild. Not for long, though. With booming economic indicators and more & more people joining the ranks of the Indian elite, this segment is suddenly back in the limelight for marketers of premium goods. The land where cheap Chinese & Taiwanese goods have sold like hot cakes, is also coming up firmly on the radar for the likes of Prada, Versace, Amex Platinum credit cards, Vertu, Lamborghini, Rolex & Porsche.

Then again, maybe it’s not just the bottom of the pyramid brigade that’s been the culprit. Even the most average management student will tell you that the luxury market is all about making exceptionally high margins to offset for low volumes. For years on, most of these luxury segment players have been grappling with very low numbers, and so most of them chose to keep a deliberate low key in India. What, indeed, makes them so bullish today?

they’re making it, right?

Volvo Car India Ltd. has been in India since 1999, when it launched its premium trucks into the country, but it brought in its cars just this year. Ask Paul de Voijs, Managing Director, Volvo Car India, about the timing of Volvo’s entry into the segment and he states, “If you see in the true sense, India is now gearing up to accept niche/luxury cars.” And not just for cars, premium products are winning in a wide range of segments, one finds that premium products are experiencing ever increasing favour from the Indian customers, who are now no longer averse to the urge to splurge. Traditionally, India has had a more consumption led growth model (79% of GDP growth led by domestic consumption), especially as compared to neighbour China (57%). Moreover, Indians are getting richer in hordes now, which is bringing them to the spotlight globally. According to Luxury Marketing Council Worldwide (LMCW), 10 Indian billionaires were added to the billionaire club in 2006, the same year that saw the Sensex surpassing the magic figure of 10,000.

then & now Many Hong Kongers are forlorn because of their inability to elect their leaders.

HONG KONG: TRANSITION While developing Marxism, Karl Marx perhaps irrationally feared from the phobia of ochlocracy because the chaos of democracy might not provide justice. Thus, he found the solution which is to give limited freedom. The same is happening with Hong Kong, which has recently celebrated its 10th anniversary under the aegis of its new parent, China with anticipation & desolation. British had handed over Hong Kong to China in 1997 with capitalism & British style political system. Unfortunately a decade later, all those hopes proved to be void. Many Hong Kongers are forlorn because of their inability to elect their leaders. On the other side, communist leadership fears if they are allowed to do so, they will separate from mainland. However, things are not so dark in this island. The mainland has quite often performed its duty when the need arose. It saved the country when it was severely suffering from economic uncertainty. Yet many in Hong Kong still believe that the ultimate salvation can only come through democracy. Would China relent? Only time can answer.
