After Lara and Katrina, the next girl to go low key with her glamour quotient is the plain Jane Vidya Balan and that too, with Vishal Bhardwaj’s production “Ishqiya” where she plays a woman belonging to a remote village. So after those innumerable failed attempts to go wild wild west with her wardrobe, Vidya is finally (thank god!) going back to what got her noticed in the first place. Lets just hope that such movies of substance are reasons good enough to help recognise her true calling!

VJ had always been a part of our band of cherubic hell-raisers in school before he took up science and the rest of us moved into commerce. But he’d stayed in touch with Kobita and through her, the rest of us. Having said that, I was still surprised to get an email from him after he had left for what was then Bangalore. Maybe he thought I’d understand because other than him, I’d been Kobita’s closest friend in school…

“ Pickles (that’s what they called me…) I don’t know why I’m writing this to you. Don’t expect you to help… just wanted to share this with someone, and who’d understand this better than you… We’re like two fishermen who sailed in the same river in a village, distant, but always connected by the current. On the banks, they might wave and talk a little. But then one day the river runs dry and both run to the city to make ends meet. And in the city when they meet, they meet like brothers, talking endlessly, of the river. And while they talk, the river runs again, coursing through their lives as it coursed through their veins… Kobita is that river, and while I talk of her to you, I feel she’s here, with me… though her life may have changed course, irretrievably…

Pickles, my emotions are running away with my thoughts. ‘Come away with me Kobita’ I had told her when we met. ‘I know you want to… I see it in the way I make you laugh the way no one else can; in the way I understand you the way no one can and I know it in the way you touch me, carelessly, almost accidentally… but your touch betrays you Kobita. It tells me things you haven’t. Your fingers, in a moment’s brief contact tell me that they long to linger but can’t; that they wish to be held, to be enveloped by a warmth that they’ve yearned for, that they want to touch not just my skin but gently caress my soul…

Scientific studies show that the ice cores on mountain peaks and glaciers, like the one on Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, have been melting regularly for nearly a century. These glaciers and ice cores are sometimes thousands and thousands of years old, but with global warming, the melting rate of these geographical features has sped up to an alarming extent.

It is worth noting that with changing times, democracy has spread all across the globe, as has secularism which now flourishes in as many as 150 countries of the world. But, the fact is that religious polarisation has also increased manifold. In fact, it has become a separate identity in itself. People like Karl Marx and others had announced the end of religion in the 19th century. But it hardly holds any truth or relevance today.

Now, people mobilise themselves saying that ‘Religion is in danger, it should be saved.’ In my view, religion should itself be able to save and protect its adherents. But acts of organisations like Ram Sene shows insecurity in a section of society which has been affected by newly-emerging market forces. The market is creating a gap between the rich and the poor. This is not a moral question; neither is it dictated by any positivist or negativist thought. It shows lack of tolerance among a section of people, which is in turn linked to the globalisation, liberalisation and crass consumerism.

That change is inevitable is the harsh reality: which in turn will lead to people taking positions for and against the issues. People like me understand this reality and keep away from these issues, except as an observer. Both in my films and politics, I always attempt to find a solution.

In the Far East we have a classic example. China is a semi colonial country which Japan is transforming, under our very eyes, into a colonial country. Japan''s struggle is imperialist and reactionary. China''s struggle is emancipatory and progressive. But Chiang Kai-shek? We need have no illusions about Chiang Kai-shek, his party, or the whole ruling class of China, just as Marx and Engels had no illusions about the ruling classes of Ireland and Poland. Chiang Kai-shek is the executioner of the Chinese workers and peasants. But today he is forced, despite himself, to struggle against Japan for the remainder of the independence of China. Tomorrow he may again betray. It is possible. It is probable. It is even inevitable. But today he is struggling. Only cowards, scoundrels, or complete imbeciles can refuse to participate in that struggle.

Let us use the example of a strike to clarify the question. We do not support all strikes. If, for example, a strike is called for the exclusion of Negro, Chinese, or Japanese workers from a factory, we are opposed to that strike. But if a strike aims at bettering— insofar as it can—the conditions of the workers, we are the first to participate in it, whatever the leadership. Japan and China are not on the same historical plane. The victory of Japan will signify the enslavement of China, the end of her economic and social development, and the terrible strengthening of Japanese imperialism. The victory of China will signify, on the contrary, the social revolution in Japan and the free development, that is to say unhindered by external oppression, of the class struggle in China.

But can Chiang Kai-shek assure the victory? I do not believe so. It is he, however, who began the war and who today directs it. To be able to replace him it is necessary to gain decisive influence among the proletariat and in the army, and to do this it is necessary not to remain suspended in the air but to place oneself in the midst of the struggle.

As it has been observed from myriad examples on the strategies and success of Andhra entrepreneurs, there is a certain common thread that runs through them. Most of these companies are floated by first generation entrepreneurs. But then, “while personal initiative and purposeful behaviour are viewed as good starting points of an entrepreneurial effort, many such initiatives fail. The archetype successful entrepreneurs are supposed to epitomise achievement motivation which facilitates the creation and development of enterprises in competitive environments,” says a market analyst. Certainly when an individual makes his initiative achievement orientated and visioning has a strong bearing on what it produces, one sees the creation of altruist enterprises. The perspective of that entrepreneur, a merchant adventurer, balances out imperfections in the market. For instance, Dr. Pratap C Reddy can be called an altruist–entrepreneur of that kind. Dr. Reddy is the founder of the Apollo Hospital Group, India's first corporate hospital group. He revolutionised the whole health care scenario in India and inspired others to follow the suit. Today, India has over 750 corporate hospitals all over the country. And it all started when two decades ago, Dr. Prathap C Reddy lost a patient who couldn't make it to Texas for an open heart surgery. Ironically it was this incident that urged Dr. Reddy to give up his successful practice in the US to return to India in the early eighties and create a world-class medical infrastructure in India, more accessible and affordable to the common people of the country.

However, the anticlimax of the success story of Andhra entrepreneurs is somewhat bitter. In fact, ever since the Satyam-Maytas fiasco saw light in December 2008 and the arrest of K S Raju of NFL, came to fore, AP businessmen are in the news for all the wrong reasons. Hyderabad is acquiring a bad reputation, so much so, that on the day when B Ramalinga Raju made his confession, six of the Top 10 losers in the stock exchange were from Hyderabad!
