Our role ‘city’ model – Dhaka!

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

Don’t be surprised, there’s Karachi too! Read on... this is an eye-opener

Since time immemorial, India has been planning to improve the operational standards of its metros and make it at par with cities like Paris and Shanghai. And as citizens, we all do expect that city planners are leaving no stone unturned to make Delhi and Mumbai the next Shanghai and Paris of the world. Right?! Why? Aren’t they working hard to put the metro-rail lines in place? Haven’t we yet seen that brand new international-standard bus zipping past? Aren’t better malls sprouting up in different parts of our cities? Well, yes! All this is happening... but sadly, they’re not indicators of efforts on the part of the authorities to improve the standards of the metros. And we’re not saying this; blame AT Kearney if you find this an unfair comment. The consulting firm, alongwith Foreign Policy magazine recently released ‘The 2008 Global Cities Index’. Let’s give to you what the report states straight on when it comes to Indian cities. Aha! don’t be disappointed, Indians cities do figure on this list... but in the bottom half! And our role models Shanghai and Paris? They’re happily sitting on top of the list!

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

The recession of the early 1990s, however, brought into scrutiny the high visibility expenditures, such as business jets. Although NetJets benefited from the resulting wave of corporate cost cutting, the company nearly went bankrupt. During this time Santulli personally signed for $125 million for a bank loans to continue flying, and in 1992 NetJets (EJA) posted $65 million in revenues and broke even in 1994. In 1998, after being a NetJets customer for three years, Warren Buffett acquired NetJets Inc. and kept Santulli as CEO (as he is known to have done with other acquisitions). Buffett explains, “If you were to pick someone to join you in a foxhole, you couldn’t do better than Rich. No matter what the obstacle, he just doesn’t stop.” And although Rich can never think of replacing Warren Buffett, he does share a thought on what he’s do if he was selected to take over for Buffett. “If he selects me, I’d do whatever I can. No one’s going to emulate or be Warren Buffett number two, that’s not going to happen.”

An estimated three to five million jobs, direct and indirect, are dependent on the auto sector.

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

taking the us to auto drive

America’s future met America’s past on November 10, and talked on a range of issues, in particular a rescue package for the auto industry in the US. The American economy simply cannot afford one more sector collapsing at this point of time. An estimated three to five million jobs, direct and indirect, are dependent on the auto sector. Keeping these things in mind Obama has suggested an immediate aid for the auto industry from the current American President George Bush.

The alling US economy has already taken a toll on the aviation industry and financial sector leading to a number of companies moving towards a collapse. It seems that it’s now the turn of the auto industry to suffer the pain. The falling sales of the big three auto makers – Ford, General Motors and Chrysler – have put the auto industry in peril, sending another alarm to the US economy. The ongoing recession and the shrinking credit is proving disastrous for the sector and the Detroit trio are saying that sooner or later, they may run out of cash. GM has in fact claimed that it may run out out cash by the first half of 2009. The other two claim that they are not in an enviable position either and are teethering on the edge of bankruptcy. Automakers have asked for $50 billion US in loans and loan guarantees to help them face the current crisis. This does not include the $25 billion that the government has agreed to pay the auto industry to produce fuel efficient vehicles.

So this does indicate that Obama is not averse to a top down approach when it comes to aiding business in peril. He has an additional policy for the auto industry. He plans to give them extra incentives for clean energy technology. Obama plans to subsidise some 10% of health care costs (some $7 billion) of the Detroit trio if they invest half of the money in fuel efficiency research. An alternative idea is invest $3 billion for the next 10 years to remake auto plants for new innovative clean cars.

Will CEOs smile half as much?

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

People have been overwhelmed by his victory but businesses are guarded intheir optimism. Virat Bahri & Pallavi Srivastava of B&E analyse what Obama’s election could mean for business...

It is truly undeniable that the tide was heavily against John McCain. As he was busy talking on the economy, health care, banking, real estate, taxation, bail outs, experience, “Why I am not Bush!”, “My years in Vietnam!”, et al, the Americans were busy getting overwhelmed by the phenomenon of Barack Obama, and gaining faith in his promise of change. Obama won primarily because he had mastered the art of inspirational leadership; and harped repeatedly on his slogan, “Yes, we can!” Very little complicated language; just a case of excellent positioning at an excellent time.

That did compel critics and even TV show comedians to comment that Obama had very little in terms of definite plans for American revival. In the heat of what will now be remembered as a historic US Presidential election, American stand up comedian and talk show host Jay Leno quipped, “Barack Obama continues to criticise John McCain’s economic plan. McCain would like to criticise Obama’s plan, but nobody knows what it is yet. So we’re still waiting!”

While media here goes ga ga over what his election means to India; we should realise that his first priority is to rescue his own country from arguably one of its most testing times in history. So predictably, it’s time for Obama to now work out his plan for revival of US economy and business. His foreign policy is undoubtedly crucial, but even by reviving America itself, he would automatically be doing the world, and India, a great favour!

A twenty year old guy, for example, is less likely to avoid a bike ad on a sports channel like ESPN than on Star Plus.

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

This is because when the involvement of the viewer with the channel or the show is high, he or she tends to be more attentive thus ad avoidance on these channels by those audiences is low. As per aMap, ad avoidance on a high involvement channel varies around 15-20% and on other channels it is around 70-80%. A twenty year old guy, for example, is less likely to avoid a bike ad on a sports channel like ESPN than on Star Plus. This helps marketers and advertisers choose genres and channels for specific customer segments.

Thus to address ad avoidance, companies must follow basic principles – unearth better and more compelling consumer insights, use tools, approaches and human judgment to ensure communication is placed in environments where people are receptive, use the right media mix and create killer ideas that stick. As the better ‘half’ shrinks further, companies will be increasingly compelled to undertake such due diligence in formulating their communication budgets.

“If a company wants to increase its market share, they will have to launch more legends in the Indian geography.”

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

It is crucial in this market to have a strong positioning statement to establish the premium brand quotient. A heritage in the racing arena comes in quite handy for Yamaha in this case. Says Sanjay, “When we develop new technologies, our aim is always to enhance the man-machine relationship, which ultimately makes our products stand out. Also R1 is a super sports and the DNA is coming from our Moto GP winning bike the M1, I am sure customers of superbikes do understand the heritage of R1 very well.” Hayabusa’s positioning, as indicated in Dhoom, has a lot of focus on the speed factor, as it comes to India with an upper speed limit of 299 km/hr (although globally, it has launched bikes with an upper speed limit of 397 km/hr).

Primarily, the superbikes manufacturers are trying to bring in more and more popular products in the country. As auto expert, Tutu Dhawan states, “If a company wants to increase its market share, they will have to launch more legends in the Indian geography.” Even the companies know that marketing and advertising of these products is really not going to do a trick in this category. “Advertising of these products will be of no use, as it will really not help increasing the sales figures. So, companies will have to rely on the word-of-mouth advertising,” asserts Gupta. User communities are a good indicator of brand loyalty in this product category, as customers here take biking to be almost like a ‘larger than life’ experience. For instance, Hayabusa users have formed an online community – hayabusa.org, has over 20,000 members, who love shareing pictures, videos and information.

Creative Capitalism with Social Business...

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

Nobel Laureate Dr. Yunus debates on why his previously published views on Creative Capitalism missed the mark... A B&E exclusive

My interview titled as “I don’t believe in ‘Creative Capitalism’!” was published in Business & Economy as a part of a cover story titled “Saving Capitalism” on October 16, 2008. The interview gives a completely different presentation of my actual views on the subject. This will create total confusion in the readers mind. I would like to clarify my views on the basic issues. I hope you will publish my letter to remove the misgivings in the minds of the readers.

The appropriate title of the interview would have been “Creative Capitalism with Social Business”, because that is what I have been pleading for. I was very excited when Bill Gates proposed the path of “Creative Capitalism”. It made my job immensely easier. It needed courage and conviction for Bill Gates, a life long beneficiary of capitalism, to say in unambiguous words that capitalism as practiced now misses out many important issues of human life ¾ poverty, health, nutrition, housing, etc. He took the initiative to direct capitalism to those areas and called it “creative capitalism”. Of course, any human organisation has to be creative. That is not the creativity Bill Gates was referring to.

The Devil’s Alternatives!

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

Now that we know why Indian telecom majors need a Plan B, here’s a quick insight into some of the most viable options that they have...

If the generous open spaces, rows upon rows of lush greenery and pretty fountains, and the rippling sound of water created by the huge artificial lake within the sprawling Dhirubhai Ambani Knowledge City (DAKC) in Navi Mumbai, serenade your senses and lull you into a feeling of utter tranquility; rest assured that the perception will disappear the moment you enter the bustling facade of any one of the several blocks (buildings really) that houses the many offices of Reliance Communications (RCOM). Despite the slowdown scare in the economy, every RCOM honcho within the campus is bursting with exuberance, high on the big-budget launch of their DTH initiative Big TV and the impending rollout of GSM services in 14 circles from the present eight. Dig a little beneath the surface and you realise that the optimism stems from the fact that Ambani junior has seemingly got his game plan in place. In RCOM, the focus has long ago shifted from mere subscriber additions to customer retention and enhanced quality and variety of service. The aim is to hedge risks by diversifying into related businesses on the one hand and improve efficiency and quality of the core telecom service on the other.

In his first floor office overlooking the lake at DAKC, Sanjay Behl, the RCOM Branding Head, is almost matter of fact when he admits that the colossal volume growth rate for telcos is certain to ebb. “The size of the addressable market is certainly going to shrink,” he agrees, adding that, “After that, the battle ground will move from acquisition to retention and other revenue schemes (VAS/ data services).” For the record, till now, between 70-95% of the revenues of telecom players come via voice calls alone, and here too lower margins and decreasing ARPUs are taking a toll.

Don’t worry; just 350 years to solve your case! It’ll be quick!!!

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

There’s corruption and fragility galore in the quagmire of the Indian administrative & judicial system...

Corruption - which has spread its roots across all pillars across India and has now become an oft-discussed subject in India, surprisingly never fails to stir up resentment. Democracy, judiciary and governance today are at crossroads, from where every path to development seems vague and dusty.

In the Global Integrity Report, that analyses almost all ranking and indices developed world wide, India’s overall ranking is moderate, but its performance on judicial and political parameters are truly unacceptable. Even Transparency International in its Corruption Perception Index (CPI) has given India the 85th slot out of 180 countries. This ranking seems to be of first-class after one finds out that around 30% of Indians, officially, below the poverty line (BPL) have to splurge Rs.9,000 million as bribes to public servants in order to get their basic work done. And the work is nothing but getting services from the Public Distribution System, health-care, school education, police, electricity, water supply, and not to forget the flagship programme of UPA government – the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS). Almost 50% of BPL household paid Rs.2,150 million to policemen alone for getting their work done.

What else can you expect from a country where the leaders are involved in bribery scandals and planning, even when it is aired live on almost all national TV channels. For all those who aren’t able to comprehend this, we are talking about the recent incident where a politician was bribed to support UPA government (and also the cash for votes scandal on July 22). This is just not one of its type, but India has had a series of similar incidences, be it the Bofors arms deal, the Bihar fodder scam or the High Court judge bribery case. This we guess justifies the score of 17.8 that India received on Political stability parameter from the World Bank on governance indicators. In the 2007 Transparency International’s Global Corruption Perception Index, India’s rank was 72nd amongst 179 countries and like in the past, this ranking keeps telling the tale of increasing corruption activities in India. But the final blow came from transparency international, which – like in all its previous years – fortified that India is still a very corrupt country (India’s position fell by 13 positions).

WHY NUMBERS NUMB?

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

SUTANU GURU ON HOW AND WHY NUMBERS MISLEAD AND MISINFORM

Numbers can be exhilarating; they can also be exasperating. Numbers can make your chest swell with insolent pride; they can also make your heart seethe with impotent rage. It all depends on the numbers that you prefer to look at; the kind of numbers that appeal to you and the power of the spin doctors to transform moments of embarrassment and shame into heady celebrations of ‘arrival’ on the global stage. Numbers often tell a heart warming story. They also ensure that there is, more often than not, a savage twist in the tale.

Just take one example. If you go by the numbers constantly trotted out by the honourable Shivraj Patil who handles the Union Home Ministry, acts of violence and terror have actually come down drastically during the UPA regime as compared to the previous NDA regime. If numbers were all that made you feel safe and secure, there would be no problems at all. But even a school kid knows that the ‘numbers’ trotted out by the Minister are a farcical attempt at black humour. Not only have terror attacks by extremist Jehadis grown and become more brazen; India is now witness to the possible involvement of some right wing Hindutva outfits in terror attacks in a grotesque display of “me too” obscurantism.

Numbers can also make things look far worse than they actually are. If you go by the manner in which the Sensex is in a seemingly endless free fall, it would appear as if the India growth story is well and truly over and that the dark days are again upon us. The same numbers that were dished out just a few months ago to herald the emergence of India as a Superpower are now being bandied about to showcase how India is a collapsing power. Sure, when something tumbles from 21,000 to about 8,000, it is easy to take a very pessimistic view. But then think soberly and you will realise that India is not heading for economic apocalypse. It is childish and dangerous to call a drop in GDP growth rate from 9% per annum to 7% as a recession, or even worse, a depression. Sure, many Indians will suffer the aftermath of this global economic meltdown. But wait just a few years when things are back in shape and you will be laughing at how all of us overreacted.

Is the taxpayer-financed bailout the only way out?

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

Everyone is anxious about foreclosure of a million homes, and concerned about jobs & savings

The simultaneous unfolding of the US presidential campaign & unravelling of financial markets presents one of those occasions where political & economic systems starkly reveal their nature. The initial Bush proposals to deal with the crisis so reeked of totalitarianism that they were quickly modified. The immediate origins of the current meltdown lie in the collapse of the housing bubble supervised by Federal Reserve Chairman, Alan Greenspan.

But the roots are deeper. In part they lie in the triumph of financial liberalisation in the past 30 years. These steps increased the frequency and depth of severe reversals, which now threaten to bring about the worst crisis since the Great Depression. Also predictably, the narrow sectors that reaped enormous profits from liberalisation are calling for massive state intervention to rescue collapsing financial institutions.

Such interventionism is a regular feature of state capitalism, though the scale today is unusual. In a functioning democratic society, a political campaign would address such fundamental issues, looking into root causes and cures, and proposing the means by which people suffering the consequences can take effective control.

Ignoring systemic risk leads to more risk-taking than would take place in an efficient economy, even by the narrowest measures. The task of financial institutions is to take risks, to ensure that potential losses to themselves will be covered. Financial liberalisation has effects well beyond the economy. It has long been understood that it is a powerful weapon against democracy. Free capital movement creates what some have called a “virtual parliament” of investors and lenders, who closely monitor government programmes and “vote” against them if they are considered irrational: for the benefit of people, rather than concentrated private power.

Paving the road to corruption

Just as corrupt customs officials might look the other way for a slice of the action, crooked politicians and contractors have been siphoning cash from road-building projects for as long as there have been roads. Road construction requires materials such as sand and stones and lots of manual labour, all purchased locally by contractors. The Tony Sopranos of the world have figured out that there is good money to be made by over-invoicing these contracts: Double the budget for supplies, buy some cheap concrete, and split the leftover cash with your cronies in the roads ministry. As with all other forms of corruption, we need data before we can investigate potential solutions. Here, we turn to Ben Olken, an economist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, who has devised an innovative method. Olken wanted to figure out how much money was being stolen from a World Bank construction programme in Indonesia. Under the terms of the programme, 600 villages received $9,000 each to build a local road. If Olken could determine how much was spent actually building each road, he could find out how much cash had “leaked out”. So, Olken sent teams of experienced engineers to all 600 villages to assess the quality of each road. The teams dug up road samples, measured pavement depth, and analysed whether a road had been “watered down” by using cheap sand instead of expensive gravel.

As part of the study, Olken also built in metrics that tried to ensure the money was well spent. Some villages were informed ahead of time that their road project would be audited. Others were ordered to hold “town hall”-style meetings to allow villagers to discuss and monitor construction plans. There was also a third set of “control” villages, where nothing special was done at all.

In the villages with no special oversight, road funds disappeared at an average of nearly 30%, about $2,700. Nearly as much was stolen in the villages with town-hall meetings. In the villages where contractors were forewarned about audits, theft dropped below 20% – still a sizeable loss, but a third less than appeared in the other two groups. From just this single innovative study, we can gain insights into the anticorruption efforts that will likely work best in other development projects.
