Rebranding the current band of better-looking and superior-performing GM models with the same ‘old’ branding principles is another ‘no-brainer’ exercise undertaken by you. Experts confirmed that the brand new Malibu saloon and the CTS & STS range of vehicles required an unrelated new brand platform that was not corrupted by the ‘legacy’ liabilities of the past. But you Rick, continued branding the promising Malibu, with the Chevrolet brand and CTS/STS with the Cadillac brand. And the ugly Pontiac Aztec was never gotten rid of, for legacy cannot be forgotten, can it? And now we’ve come to also know that you will continue to depend on your ‘Chevrolet-Cadillac-Buick-GMC’ brands. Then comes your plan to make Chevrolet the ‘central’ brand. That this brand is the most ill-positioned in the GM portfolio need not be consequence.


If you don’t believe it, then we must ask you this. Did you yourself know that GM sells both high-priced sports vehicles (like the Corvette Z01) and small cars (like Aveo, Spark et al) under the Chevrolet brand? Rick, though we know and fanatically believe that your ‘multi-pronged branding strategy’ is too intricate and complicated for your own managers and customers to understand, we’ll stand by you come hell [which seems to be where you’re headed].

As dark clouds ominously hang low over most of Asia, environmentalists are urging nations to transform into low-carbon economies...

In the words of William Ruckelshaus, “nature provides a free lunch, but only if we control our appetites.” If not judiciously used, it stands to change the ABCs of our very lives. In the present day scenario, the elements threatening to play havoc with our lives are the ABCs in our environment. Atmospheric Brown Clouds (ABCs) are expanding and assuming alarming proportions these days. These Atmospheric Brown Clouds are hovering over Asia and have been blocking out the sun and are aggravating the climatic imbalance brought on by the greenhouse effect. A noxious concoction of soot, smog and toxic chemicals has played havoc with the health of over a million in Asia, according to United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) reports, and has altered the weather patterns in Arabian Peninsula, China and around the western Pacific Ocean. The three-kilometer thick ‘brown cloud’ of man-made pollution has had an immediate effect on the Himalayan-Hindu Kush glaciers, causing the ice-caps to melt.

Often termed as regional haze, these Atmospheric Brown Clouds have become the newest threat to global environment. The environmentalists believe that these brown clouds are caused mainly by the burning of fossil fuels and biomass, and ejections from motor vehicles and thermal plants. Nick Nuttall, Spokesperson to the Executive Director, UNEP, also adds that “if these gases are combined with other harmful emissions like C02, methane and other greenhouse gases, it would lead to further complexities.”

In that case, would Obama recommit his forces? We deduce in the negative. Would Obama then have the courage to tell the world at large that the US invasion of Iraq had much less to do with ‘War on Terror’ and more about preventing Saddam Hussein from becoming the Gulf oil king? Or would Obama publicly announce the return of all the oil that US has been ‘importing’ out of Iraq? In spite of his victory speech at Grant Park – considered amongst the three greatest ever – we guess Obama would smilingly give such acceptances a bye. Damned if he does.

Bush was blamed for over-stretching the defense budgets; there is little doubt that Obama would reduce it. For the FY 2008, aggregate security related funding of US is estimated to be $549 billion. If one includes the $173 billion supplementary budget for the ‘War on Terror’, then the overall defense budget stands at $749 billion. Likewise, for 2009, the total estimated request for defense budget stands at around $663 billion. This excludes the major spending on research of future weapons systems that US undertakes consistently.

To close the list of the lamentable ten, we finally discuss the world’s most profitable company (for FY2007) – ExxonMobil – which shaved off a clean 18.4% from its shareholders’ kitty during the past year, to touch $376.5 billion in Mcap value. Yes, though the company’s shareholders have long rejoiced on the back of increasing fuel prices, Michael R. Englund, Principal Director and Chief Economist, Action Economics explains, “The oil company stock was boosted sharply, and ‘unsustainably’, by the explosion of energy prices that significantly overshot any reasonable assessment of the long-term supply-demand balance in the industry,” yet its shareholders are also amongst those facing the music. The primary reason why Exxon shareholders stand to greatest risk is not because it doesn’t want to “invest in sunshine” as Rex Tillerson, CEO, ExxonMobil says, but because it is hell-bent on being the ‘climate villian’. Having misstated climate change, with scientific debate of course, the corporate brand has always been the one to face maximum reputational damage. As per an oil industry expert, “The reputational damage alone amounts to about $10-15 billion of the eroded value over last year…” More so, there is the litigation risk that the company exposes its shareholders to, which as per market experts could cost them upto a brain-tingling $100 billion in the years to come. The issue with ExxonMobil today is just one: who knows which new policy will knock it off its feet?!

And why are we harping over Obama and all that’s happening in US? Isn’t this a detailed discussion on ‘just’ the apparel market and its exports? Well, 40% of our exports hit American shores... and we’re talking about a $12 billion industry here! Whether Obama will help Indian apparel dreams during this recessionary period is not the question here; rather, it is whether we will actually see a repeat of the tremors which hit Indian apparel industry during the early 1990s, when America was suffering and many Indian textile units were forced to close shops. If statistics make sense, then make what you can out of this: apparel exports to US during August 2008 was just $2.2 billion, that’s a fall by a dangerous 4.79% when compared to the same figure in January 2008... Worried yet by the ‘magnitude of damage’? If you haven’t got the drift of our argument, this is what we mean by the ‘magnitude of damage’ – a monstrous $111.1 million in reduced export earnings! Isn’t that worrying?!

Porsche has made a whopping $8.7 billion by selling VW options; but may have to give up ownership bid

If you had begun to expect anything but good news from the auto sector in these times, Volkswagen's (VW) share price phenomenon late last month must have been quite a revelation. In fact, the auto maker became the world’s largest company by m-cap for a while on October 28; when its share price touched a peak of €1,005 (closed at €210.85 on October 26), which immediately raised panic in European markets that hedge funds and other traders could collapse after betting on a fall in the stock (though the price dropped back to close at €517 a day later).

That was the news; now for the fine print. Porsche, which earlier showed interest in acquiring VW twice, officially holds 42.6% in VW. But after Porsche announced that it has acquired an additional 31.5% in the company via cash-settled options, investors realised that after combining Porsche’s and state of Lower Saxony's holding (20.1%), there’s only 5% equity left in the market to close or to reverse their bets that VW’s share price will fall. The market is rife with allegations of Porsche misusing loopholes in German laws.
