depleting goodwill and growing competition in the Indian market have more than anything to do with this act...

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

But how could one explain that for the first time, 26 members of PepsiCo’s executive committee flew down to India? For sure, they consider themselves more than just harbingers of a healthy environment! And yes, depleting goodwill and growing competition in the Indian market have more than anything to do with this act... By creating a diversified portfolio (with a fine balance of both beverages and snacks), PepsiCo had already stolen the show from Coca-Cola. However, sustainability was questionable, especially after ITC has stuck its foot in the snacks market with its Bingo launch in 2007. As a result, Pepsi Foods’ Frito Lay has only stood a mere spectator to its market pie shrinking by 10%. Therefore, PepsiCo is also working at a feverish pace to revamp its portfolio. It is shifting focus from the sugary drinks and salty snacks and working more along the lines of the ‘healthy’ tag; ‘good for you’ product is what Nooyi calls it. At present, Pepsi’s portfolio ratio of ‘good for you’ to ‘fun for you’ products in the country is just 30:70. “But we would get it up to 50:50,” promises Nooyi.

Does the smile give it away? The year-to-date stock losses, as per Standard & Poor’s Broad Market Indices,

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

On November 4, 2008, Religare Enterprises approved the takeover of a majority stake in the badly hit Lotus AMC. Experts say it’s a distress sale! Well, to us it looks more like a distress buy. GK analyses...

GK’s my name, Gyanendra Kashyap, for short! You see, after years of fiduciary experience [1.5 years to be precise; anything more than ‘one’ in the financial world qualifies for the plural], I’ve realised that in the financial world, when you try to cut it short, you end up quite long. That’s where I come from, and I guess you’re kind of getting what I mean by short cuts! But more of that later; it’s a promise I’ll keep.

First, the world and how it all added up to the quagmire leading up to Lotus India Asset Management Company Pvt Ltd and Religare Enterprises. In a milieu wherein economists and analysts alike unanimously now agree that a V-shaped recovery for the market is a misplaced phenomenon, investors across the globe have lost $16.22 trillion year to date since January 2008. The year-to-date stock losses, as per Standard & Poor’s Broad Market Indices, has been bloody, to say the least. For example, while a country like Russia lost a hitting 65.69%, Argentina lost 65.69%; and Brazil at a negative 53.22%, China [-58.87%], Poland [-55.04%], Egypt [-54.46%], Hungary [-60.24%], Israel [-30.87%], Philippines [-54.17%], Malaysia [-47.11%], Pakistan [-54.20%], Turkey [-60.81%], South Africa [-48.91%], Indonesia [-62.73%] and Taiwan [-45.72%] rounded off the martyr bulls in the global Spanish bull fight! And India was perhaps one of the worst hit with -64.70% in stock loss.

A wonder in the desert...In fact, the use of heads of other animals atop the lion’s body, depict the region they were built in.

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

Acity of over 16 million, Cairo is not what you call a gentle city. With driveways packed with the swankiest of cars, the sheer intensity of the city will either seduce you or appal you. Whatever the case, if you want to escape the chaos of the city, then a stroll along the waterfront Corniche is the best way to unwind. Deriving its name from Al-Qahirah, meaning triumphant, Cairo is renowned for being the 'Jewel of the Nile,' for it presents its visitors with an experience that is not easily forgotten.

Cairo, considered the heart of Egypt, offers visitors the most famous Pharaonic and Islamic monuments. One must begin with a visit to Sakkara (Saqqarah), a vast ancient burial ground in Egypt, featuring the world’s oldest standing pyramid built for King Djoser in 2650 B.C. Not too far from Sakkara is Memphis, the first ancient capital of the old Kingdom of Egypt. This city founded in 3100 B.C. by Menes was the second city of Egypt until the establishment of Fustat and is now nothing more than a source of stone for the surrounding establishments. Oh..!! Being in Egypt and missing out on the Great Sphinx? Do not forget to put this marvel of a monument right up there on your priority list. In ancient Egyptian mythology, Sphinx is a zoomorphic figure, depicted as a recumbent lion with a man’s head. The figure is associated with the Solar Deity Sekhmet, who was a strong figure in the religion front throughout the history and it is said that Sphinxes are considered to be her children. In fact, the use of heads of other animals atop the lion’s body, depict the region they were built in.

Other sites not to be given the miss are the Egyptian Museum of Antiquities where Tutankhamen collection of treasures is on display, and the renowned 12th century Saladin Citadel situated in old Cairo. In the premises of this Citadel is the Alabaster Mosque of Mohammed Ali whose minaret can be seen from any part of the city, making it a must visit.

Shopping in Cairo is perfect for both budget and exclusive items. Apart from the top-notch brands, one can find inexpensive decorative items to fill up the shelf space back home. If looking for good deals on gold or silver, the Khan el-Khalili is where to head. In short, if Cairo is where one's headed, get ready to be mesmerised by the mystery of the great pyramids and the beauty of the Nile, for these sights are awe-inspiring and their history simply amazing and mysterious.

As gifts may increase our revenue in the short term but for the long term we have to communicate our real value to the customer.

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

Insightful innovation

B&E: What was the rationale behind going from mass to premium? MBS: The reason behind this step by the company is stiff price competition which is taking place very fast and China-made products are coming up. So we went on a survey in India to find out how people view LG as a brand. We will become service and quality oriented. The other rationale is that the resale value of LG products is high and the customer is always ready to pay more because of good quality. We have already experienced this from the mass marketing.

B&E: What has been the response to the strategy? MBS: The response is really enormous. In this campaign, the notice count on the trust and quality has been great. Last to last year, we have launched many discounts, but since last year we have stopped. We surveyed and found out that what the customer really wants is not gifts but extra service, good quality and user friendly products. As gifts may increase our revenue in the short term but for the long term we have to communicate our real value to the customer. Then only we can ask to pay more but not too much i.e. only 2-5 %.

B&E: Are you changing your target customers as well in the process? MBS: We are going to play across all segments. India’s market penetration rate is low. Still in the lower category we saw there is certain amount of customers who want good products like LG. Although it’s a price sensitive segment, customers are ready to pay more and they decide on a budget. Within the budget if somebody offers the product they are keen to it. Like Toyota has launched small cars also and they play across all segments. So when you play in price sensitive segment, it doesn’t mean that you have fewer brands. It’s a segment and you just fulfill the customer demands.

B&E: What is your future agenda for LG India? MBS: I have to leave some legacy with the company. It is all about a premium brand, organisation culture, teamwork as all the employees are very loyal to LG. Really good people are here and best of corporate practices have to be cultivated in them.

LIC’s market investments are well timed, apart from IRDA norms

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

A risky cover?

The investment may seem to be huge, but considering the Rs.8.06 trillion asset portfolio of LIC, out of which it is entitled by IRDA norms to invest 35% in equity along with mutual funds, corporate loans, FD, et al, the investment amount is reasonable enough.

A simple evaluation shows that out of the 35% allowed in equity et al, even after Rs.170 billion investment in the equity market, LIC would still have a surplus of Rs.2.6 odd trillion, which it can utilise for corporate loans and fixed deposits. In addition, LIC is all set to raise its fresh premium income by around 40% in FY ‘10 from the current Rs.110 billion (thanks to PSUs, which are expected to raise gratuity liability cover from Rs.0.35 million to Rs.1 million). Of the promised investment amount, Rs.40 billion would be infused by the end of March 2009. LIC has equity investment of about Rs.2 trillion in listed entities.

The only hurdle which LIC could face is from the IRDA (Insurance Regulatory & Development Authority), which caps the firm’s exposure in individual firms at 10% (LIC’s stake in several companies exceed the limit) earlier the limit was 20% (down from 30%). LIC has exceeded the limit and it will have to lobby with the IRDA to relax investment norms (as it has done for infrastructure companies). Apart from this bolt from the regulator, LIC’s aggressive investment in the bourses seems logical and well timed. That should be a boon for policy holders who have gone for equity linked plans.

Were bailouts given to secure fat bonuses?

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

After receiving bailout money, the executives are laughing their way to the bank

Maureen DowdThe President’s disgust at Wall Street looters was good. But we need more. We need disgorgement. Disgorgement is when courts force wrongdoers to repay ill-gotten gains. And I’m ill at the gains gotten by scummy executives while they’re getting bailed out by us! With the equally laconic Tim Geithner beside him, Obama called it “shameful” and “height of irresponsibility” for Wall Street bankers to give themselves $18.4 billion worth of bonuses for last year. They should know better, he coolly chided. But big shots seem impervious to knowing better.

When you make money out of money, unmoored from morality and regulators, it must unhinge you. How else to explain corporate welfare queens partridge hunting in England, buying French jets and Lamborghinis? Obama was less bracing during his campaign, when AIG executives were caught going to posh retreats after taking an $85 billion bailout. He called for them to be fired and to reimburse the federal Treasury. Now that he has the power to act, Obama spoke, as his spokesman Robert Gibbs put it, “Like that disappointed parent that doesn’t embarrass you in the mall, but you feel like you’ve let somebody down.” That’s not enough, not with the President continuing to dole out a trillion dollars to these malefactors of great wealth.

USA Today wrote about ‘The AIG effect’: Executives finding ways to spend more discreetly. More than a disappointed parent, they need a special prosecutor. Anyone who gave bonuses after accepting federal aid should be fired, and that money should be disgorged to the Treasury. Claire McCaskill popped out a bill to limit the pay of anyone at firms taking federal money to no more than the President makes – $400,000. She said on the Senate floor, “You can’t use taxpayer money to pay out $18 billion in bonuses. And they owe us something other than a fancy wastebasket and $50 million jet.” One Obama official said her idea is catchy, but it won’t work “because no one would come to the Treasury to participate, and that means our economy would continue to stumble downward.”

Sen. Chuck Grassley urged the administration to snatch back the bonuses. The Republican told me, “If this were Japan & a corporate executive did what is being done on Wall Street, they’d either commit suicide or go before the board and the country & apologise.” He was shocked to learn that the Office of Management and Budget, insistent on following the Paperwork Reduction Act, was dragging down a special inspector general’s investigation of what banks are doing with taxpayer money. Aren’t the taxpayers shareholders in these corporations now, and can’t shareholders sue or scream “You misspent my money!” like Judy Holliday? “In The Solid Gold Cadillac,” said Frank, who knows the movie.

“We got some preferred shares,” he mused, “but I don’t think we could sue on that basis.” Rudy Giuliani resurfaced Friday to defend corporate bonuses, telling CNN that cutting them would mean less spending in restaurants and stores. Stupid. Even without bonuses, these gazillionaires can still eat out!

Some Obama policy-makers still buy into the notion that if they’re too strict, these economic royalists, to use FDR’s epithet, might balk at the bailout, preferring perks over the prospect of their banks going belly-up. The President needs to think like Andrew Cuomo. “’Performance bonus’ for many of the CEOs is an oxymoron,” he said. “I would tell them, a) you don’t deserve a bonus, b) where are you going to go? and c) if you want to go, go.”

Maureen Dowd

Terror on rampage

Gujarat blast Terror revisited Gujarat and Maharashtra this week. Three people were killed in a major motor-bicycle blast that took place in a busy market area of Malegaon. Nearly 70 people were injured.
