Obama's brigade promises a fresh perspective to the Middle East issue, but is treading on a difficult terrain

With a near thunderbolt pace, American President Barack Obama has transformed the line of US foreign policy in less than a week. After taking the oath to the Oval office, the new President made it clear that America’s aspirations and objectives will be in accordance with its ideals and the rule of law. By saying “we have no time to lose,” Obama summarised in a curt reply how pressing he deems it to bolster American foreign relations. In the first two days, the new-fangled government has been taking actions at a pace that were unheard and unseen in the previous administration. Giving orders from the White House and State Department headquarters, Obama pronounced the shutting down of the Guantanamo Bay confinement centre in Cuba; the selection of two extraordinary diplomatic envoys to aid in achieving Arab-Israeli amity; the issues in Afghanistan and Pakistan are also being addressed. However, some experts believe that the Guantanamo step has been taken in haste.

Pfizer’s bid for Wyeth makes sense; but it suffers from the fundamental problem with M&As – high risk!

Abuyout offer? Nothing new about it... Recession? Again, not a new occurence... Now, combine the two and there you have your eyes opened, and wide! And here’s Pfizer proving why both can coexist, through its $68 billion bid for Wyeth. In the name of cost synergies, Pfizer hopes to save $4 billion annually in operational costs via streamlining of activities. But as researches over time have proven, most big-ticket M&As have failed to generate any synergy! So here’s the question – is the deal logical?

Pfizer faces a major challenge of new drug development as its patent for Lipitor (that contributed to $6 billion in FY2008) will expire in November 2011. And that gives a ‘real’ reason for the merger – revenue generation! Wyeth’s core competence is in R&D. About 350 scientists in its labs are solely working on the much-awaited drug formulae for treating Alzheimer’s disease that can become the next drug wonder for Pfizer (generating revenues up to $20 billion annually).

Europe gloated during the meltdown, claiming it would be left untouched. The claims return to haunt a failing Europe

I945: Europe is completely devastated and in ruins after the Second World War. It is also facing the haunting spectre of Communism emanating from the Soviet Union. And yet, Western Europe rises from the ashes and emerges as a powerhouse of economic growth and all round prosperity. The resurgence is thanks largely to the Marshall Plan implemented by the United States.

1957: A handful of European nations come together and form the European Economic Community that seeks a ‘European’ perspective on global as well as local issues. This is the first tentative attempt by Europe to emerge out of the trans-Atlantic embrace with America. Many more nations join by 1967 and Europe starts dreaming of a unified market that can emerge more powerful than America.

1993: The European Union emerges as an actual rival of the United States with 500 million citizens and 30% of the world output. By now, Europe is frequently critical of America and its policies – political, strategic as well as economic. The criticism climaxes after the foolhardy George Bush decision to invade Iraq in 2003 and many start openly talking of EU as a rival to the US and euro as the rival to the dollar.

Sri Lanka may finally crush LTTE, but India has lost out a valuable opportunity to extend its influence

Along with Osama bin Laden, Velupillai Prabhakaran is the most elusive character encountered by security agencies in the world. The Sri Lankan forces can certainly vouch for it. Weeks after President Mahinda Rajapakse vowed to get rid of Tamil Tigers, the fight inside the dense Mullaithivu jungles continues with no sign yet of the Tiger supremo. These jungles are recognised as the last holding point of the Tamil guerillas. The Sri Lankan government, in its effort to drive home its offensive, has asked the air force to bombard the dense forests in an effort to flush out LTTE militants. A spokesperson for the air force confirmed that ‘in support of ground troops’, bombardment of Tiger positions would continue. “The next step of the war would be that the LTTE, after being ousted from its well fortified positions, will go back to what it knows best, guerilla warfare,” Maj. Gen. Ashok Mehta, former general officer commanding with the Indian Peace Keeping Forces (IPKF) in Sri Lanka, told B&E.

If China continues its development, there’s slim chance Obama can control us

However, while the former Secretary of the Treasury has asked Beijing not to devalue the RMB, Obama’s administration has remained rather silent on the issue. In fact, Obama’s handpicked Timothy L. Geithner somehow favours a more “disciplined and conservative fiscal policy” that may reduce capital flow and the exchange rate.

The devaluation of the US dollar will definitely affect the prospects of the treasury bonds held by different Chinese banks and corporations. The collapse of the US domestic market will further hurt China’s vast export interests and direct investment in the States. Putting aside the economic figures, this also means a reduction in Washington’s ability to impose economic pressure on Beijing.

On the security front, one of the features of the Bush administration is its unilateral action in foreign policy. As Joseph Nye has stated, Bush’s office has nearly destroyed all the American soft-power capacity established since the Cold War. As a consequence, Obama’s administration has put “Renewing American Global Leadership” as of the utmost importance.

We deduce in the negative. Would Obama then have the courage to tell the world at large that the US invasion of Iraq had much less to do with ‘War on Terror’ and more about preventing Saddam from becoming the Gulf oil king? Or would Obama publicly announce the return of all the oil that US has been ‘importing’ out of Iraq? In spite of his victory speech at Grant Park – considered amongst the three greatest ever – we guess Obama would smilingly give such acceptances a bye. Damned if he does.

Bush was blamed for over-stretching the defence budgets; there is little doubt that Obama would reduce it. For the FY 2008, aggregate security related funding of US is estimated to be $549 billion. If one includes the $173 billion supplementary budget for the ‘War on Terror’, then the overall defence budget stands at $749 billion. Likewise, for 2009, the total estimated request for defence budget stands at around $663 billion.

In all, it is futile to expect too much, except Obama’s fight to save capitalism. The world would remain the same and Africans would continue to fight ethnic wars, hijack ships and die of AIDS for lack of antiretroviral drugs. As the rats jump, so does the common man in the US, and elsewhere, who cannot be blamed for expecting Obama to be a panacea for all the ills. Try he will... and fail he will. But love him still, we will! Damn!
